Toyota Recalls Over 50,000 Highlanders and Hybrids in Canada Due To Safety Issue

In recent news, Toyota has taken a proactive step to ensure the safety of Canadian drivers by issuing a safety recall affecting specific Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles from model years 2020 to 2023. Approximately 50,501 vehicles in Canada are included in this recall, and here’s what you need to know. This follows on the heels of a recall in the U.S. that saw 751,000 Highlander vehicle models from the same years also being recalled due to the similar bumper concerns, according to The Associated Press.

The Concern

The vehicles under scrutiny come equipped with a front lower bumper cover assembly made of resin, securely fastened with mounting tabs. The cause for concern arises from the possibility of a minor impact to the lower front bumper cover assembly, which could result in the mounting tabs detaching during regular vehicle operation. If this occurs, there is a potential risk of one or more components of this assembly detaching and becoming a road hazard. This poses an increased risk of accidents or injury to other road users.

Toyota’s Response

To address this issue, Toyota’s authorized dealers are taking action. They will inspect the upper to lower front bumper cover mounting tabs and slots to determine whether there is any damage. If no damage is found, the dealers will install an improved-design retention hardware to enhance the safety of these vehicles. In cases where damage is identified, the upper and/or lower front bumper cover will be replaced, and the enhanced retention hardware will be installed at no cost to the vehicle owner.

Stay Informed

Owners of the affected vehicles can expect to receive notifications from Toyota regarding this matter by late December 2023.
