Juul to Pay $40 Million in Teen Vaping Lawsuit

Juul Labs is a company that manufactures electronic cigarettes – a battery-charged cigarette that vaporizes nicotine as an alternative to traditional burning cigarettes. The original goal for the e-cigarette was to become a replacement cigarette for smokers who wish to cut down on their nicotine consumption. However, the industry has led to an epidemic of underage vaping, and nicotine consumption.

Vaping is inhaling nicotine and aerosol made from countless chemicals that are toxic to your body and can cause several lung injuries and respiratory problems. Juul Labs has been accused for years that they are responsible for the explosion of teen vaping and e-cigarette use, as teen users have skyrocketed more than 70% since the company launched in North America in 2015.

Juul has been accused of creating deceiving marketing aimed and created with young people in mind. Health experts say that the incredible increase of young people using Juuls has created a generation hooked on nicotine and addictive chemicals that are extremely harmful to the developing brain.

Over the years there have been hundreds of personal injury lawsuits suing Juul Labs Inc. Recently, North Carolina Attorney General has sued Juul, accusing the company of employing unfair and deceptive practices that target young people to its vaping products. Last week, Juul agreed to pay $40 million in damages, as well as altering their marketing strategies to avoid advertising to young people. So far, all ads and social media presence targeting teens have come to a halt, and all flavors have been removed, aside from menthol.

Juul Labs Inc, based out of San Francisco, California, also serves Canadians, yet Canada has banned advertisements of vaping outside of adult-only establishments as of August 2020. The progression of limitations and rules of the e-cigarettes is positive for Canada, and the safety and health of our young people.
