What happens after submitting a disability application?

If you have contributed to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and are unable to work as the result of a disability, you may be able to receive benefits in the form of a taxable monthly payment.

You should not wait to submit your disability application. It takes approximately four months to receive a decision, so you should submit all the required information as quickly as possible.

Once your application is received, a member of the Canada Pension Plan will contact you to discuss your application and how it will be reviewed.

If your application is approved, you don’t have to do anything outside of receiving your monthly benefit. This benefit will stay in effect for as long as you are disabled and unable to work.

What if my application is denied for some reason? There is always the possibility that the Canada Pension Plan will disagree with your application. If this happens, they could request more information or simply deny your application.

You have the right to request a reconsideration in the event that you disagree with your eligibility decision or benefit amount you are offered.

Once you submit a disability application to the Canada Pension Plan, you can sit back and wait for an answer. If everything checks out and you are approved, you can move forward without any concern.

As unfortunate as it may be, it is possible that your disability claim could be denied. If that happens, you need to know your rights, how the system will treat you, and the steps you can take to turn things in your favor.
